Kayak Trip Planning with David Maxwell and John Minkley

When:   Monday, March 18th, 6:30 to 9:00 pm.

Where:   Salvation Army Citadel, 4030 Douglas Street (McKenzie exit off of Blanchard Road) Junior Room

The Plan:

David Maxwell and John Minkley have been involved over the years in many self-guided multi-day group kayak trips on Vancouver Island and the Central Coast.

The workshop is designed for both paddlers new to multi-day trips and for people who have some experience and want to learn more.  There will be an opportunity for participants to share their experiences and talk about courses or experiences they found helped them gain the confidence to take on a more adventurous trip.

A variety of trip planning topics will be discussed within the framework of three major themes:

1. Anticipating difficult decisions that may need to be made during the trip: For example: when do weather conditions warrant staying on shore; when is a crossing too problematic; if there is a more sheltered but less exciting route option along the way, when would the group choose the more sheltered route; how will these kinds of decision be made.

2. Identifying important group discussions prior to the trip: each participants expectation about the trip; what are reasonable paddling conditions; food preparation; distance paddled each day; paddling style (noodle the shore or A to B quickly); beach fires; bear safety; toileting practices; on and off water safety; preferred start times and dispute resolution.

3. Group dynamics: discussions enroute to share how each participant feels about the trip; on shore group activities: (campfire songs; beach games; board games)

David and John both find the planning for a trip to be a big part of the pleasure and excitement of multi-day paddling. A handout will be provided.
