SISKA Birding Paddle

The 2nd annual SISKA birding paddle was held on Sun May 11, under perfect conditions! Daniel Donnecke, a local naturalist, and his 13 year old son Leo, also an accomplished birder and paddler, lead 10 SISKA paddlers from their launch at Oak Bay Marina.

Birding Paddle - Oak Bay Marina/Chain Islets Area (March 29, 2014)

There was a window in the winds and rain that allowed for an interesting paddle for kayaking-birding enthusiasts.  The paddle launched from the beach south of the Oak Bay marina.

The first birds to be spotted from shore included Black Oystercatchers and Surf Scoters.

 Upon launching, we headed towards the Chain Islets, experiencing some swells over the shallow areas.

Brentwood Bay to McKenzie Bight - January 19, 2014

We had a beautiful west coast winter day for our paddle from Brentwood Bay to McKenzie Bight on January 19th , but there were a few challenges to overcome!

An overcast, warm-ish and misty morning greeted 23 hardy kayakers, many decked out (to the gunwales!) in their seasonal best, at the CFSA beach launch site.

In good holiday spirits they paddled down Esquimalt Harbour, along the shoreline and around Coles Island, carolling as they went, to the landing just before the bridge at Six Mile Pub. Here they serenaded the Tacoma family who had provided their backyard path up to Hart Road.
