Where:
We will launch at Brechin St Boat Launch in Nanaimo. Need directions to the launchsite? Click here.
Who:
This paddle will be led by Rod Stiebel For more information about this paddle email Rod Stiebel
Details:
Our leader will introduce the Plan and make sure everyone is comfortable with the requirements and any concerns that you may have. Please stay off the water until we are all ready. The leader may choose to enlist helpers and establish communications protocol. If you have VHF radio please bring it with you.
Plan A:
This will be considered a 'Destination Paddle', as we will be stopping at the Dinghy Dock Pub on Protection Island for lunch, so make sure you bring your wallet! Please note, although there will be help ,all paddlers should be comfortable in exiting and re-entering their kayak from a dock. The pub does have 'kayak parking', and we will be using this area. Plan is launch from Brechin St boat launch. There is a daily parking fee of $6, if memory serves correct. We will head north circumnavigating Newcastle Island. Stopping at the beach on Newcastle, tor a quick look around, as it is a very nice park. Then paddle across to the Dinghy dock pub on Protection Island for lunch. A bit of Kayak Glamping, without the overnite part! The paddle back to the boat ramp is about 25 minutes from the pub. NOTE: OTW time is for 10:30, not 10. We expect to be at the pub for 12:30-1:00PM, then with luck on the road home before 3:00pm. As this is up Island, understand this is a full day, including traveling.
NOTE: Our return from the pub puts us in the Nanaimo Harbour, and it is a float plane port, so care must be exercised when traversing this area. Following the paddle leader is a must!
Plan B:
AS this is up island, we may still go up, but shorten the paddle, if weather is bad. I am hoping for no issues.
