Route plan A

Plan is to launch on the Juan de Fuca side of the Whiffin Spit parking lot. NOTE: Parking is extremely tight in this parking lot. I would recommend dropping off your boat and gear and then parking up on Whiffin Spit Rd across from the Sooke Harbour House Hotel.

We will leave our launch point and head across the channel to the East Sooke shoreline and Company Point. Rounding Possession Point we will keep close to the shoreline and paddle past Iron Mine Bay ( East Sooke Regional Park). Following this coast line for approximately 2nm- our lunch destination is Cabin Point ( also in East Sooke Park). Nice pocket beach here that is out of the wind, After lunch, we head back west to the Whiffin Spit launch point. Winds and currents alowing, on the way back we can go around the south shore of Secretary Island before coming back into the Sooke inlet and Whiffin Spit beach.

If you plan to so some rock gardening along the East Sooke shoreline, please bring a helmet.

Route plan B

If the winds and resultant waves are too high, our Plan B will be to launch from Coopers Cove ( adjacent to the Stickle Back Restaurant) just off Sooke Rd. We can then do a circumnavigation of the Sooke Basin and check out Anderson and Roche Coves.

Safety reminders

Always dress for the possibility of immersion and please bring a drybag containing a spare change of clothes. The drybag goes in your kayak with you, not in your car at the launch site. Please bring a lunch or snacks and sufficient beverage to keep you hydrated, as well as a thermos of something warm. Your paddle leader will introduce the plan and make sure everyone is comfortable with the requirements. Please stay off the water until the group is ready. If you have a VHF radio please bring it with you.
