Route plan A

After introductions and a beach talk, we'll paddle north through John passage (between Goudge and Coal islands). We'll make a group crossing at Fir Cone point, heading to Pym island, while keeping an eye out for ferries which prowl these waters. Arriving at Portland Island, we'll proceed around the island counterclockwise to our lunch spot at the beautiful Arbutus Point Campground. After lunch, we'll continue our CCW journey around the island, across to Knapp Island, crossing to Canoe cove, and finally back to Amherst Beach. The distance will be close to 12 nm.

Some 'rules' for this paddle:

- all paddlers must wear either a neoprene farmer john/jane or a dry suit. Nothing else will pass the inspection of the paddle leader.

- full perimeter deck lines on your kayak, front and back.

Please make sure you follow these two rules. It would be a shame to be denied participation when you are at the beach. If in doubt, please contact the paddle leader to see if your gear meets the requested standards.

If there is a lot of interest in this paddle, the paddle leader will collect names and do a lottery draw to select participants.

Route plan B

We always paddle somewhere ! If the forecasted conditions rule out this route we'll find another paddle spot that is sheltered from the weather.

Safety reminders

Always dress for the possibility of immersion and please bring a drybag containing a spare change of clothes. The drybag goes in your kayak with you, not in your car at the launch site. Please bring a lunch or snacks and sufficient beverage to keep you hydrated, as well as a thermos of something warm. Your paddle leader will introduce the plan and make sure everyone is comfortable with the requirements. Please stay off the water until the group is ready. If you have a VHF radio please bring it with you.
