Route plan A

Hopping through the Chain Group this trip will enter the channel between Chatham and Discovery, turn north to take in the magic of the channel inside the Chathams, then round the top of the Chathams and paddle clockwise past the lighthouse to Rudlin Bay on Discovery Island for the lunch stop. Continuing clockwise, a direct return from Rudlin via the Chain Group to Oak Bay Marina completes the trip.

The launch time coincides with slack water, with the tide then turning to ebb for the rest of the day. Light current is expected to make the two crossings less challenging, but as always, be prepared for currents, wind and waves.

Immersion gear is mandatory as this is an Energizer paddle with exposed crossings and potential wind, waves and current. If you are unsure what this means, please reach out to the paddle leader for more information.

We will park on Beach Drive and launch from the beach/grassy area just to the left of the buildings near the boat ramp (don't pull into the main parking lot).

Safety reminders

Always dress for the possibility of immersion and please bring a drybag containing a spare change of clothes. The drybag goes in your kayak with you, not in your car at the launch site. Please bring a lunch or snacks and sufficient beverage to keep you hydrated, as well as a thermos of something warm. Your paddle leader will introduce the plan and make sure everyone is comfortable with the requirements. Please stay off the water until the group is ready. If you have a VHF radio please bring it with you.

Tide & current predictions

CHS provides tide heights and current predictions. Secondary current stations are estimates; large-tide estimates are identified separately. Tide turns and slack water are independent. Conditions along the route vary with location.
