This three part series is an exciting opportunity for a variety of paddlers. Those paddlers that are new to paddling in moving water will benefit from joining all three sessions and following along this progression to gaining comfort and confidence paddling in tidal currents. This progression will have a strong focus on boat handling in moving water as well as rescue and safety in this paddling environment. Paddlers are not required to take part in all three sessions. Some paddlers new to moving water may choose to only take the first session and work on a slower development progression. There may also be some paddlers with past experience and training in moving water who wish to simply join the second or third part of the series.
This program will include a half day on water session as well as a virtual theory session prior to the on water session. If you are curious about paddling in moving water or interested in taking your paddling to locations where you will encounter tidal currents this is the session for you! This gentle introduction into moving water is designed to build the confidence and knowledge paddlers need to start to paddle in this environment. Paddlers will begin to gain boat control and refine strokes in moving water. After spending some time on learning about predicting current and identifying optimal crossing times in a virtual theory session, participants will also learn to maneuver their kayak in and out of the current, set ferry angles for crossings current, as well as understanding the rescue and safety considerations of paddling in moving water. This small group session is for paddlers looking to navigate and enter into class 2 waters. Paddle Canada Level 1 Skills or above required.
