Location Spirit Bay
1 of 8 open Free
Destination Aylard Farm
Trip style Day
Distance 6.5 nm
Route plan A

Launch from Spirit Bay, Heading around the small islet and rocks up to Movie Set Beach, which was supposed to be our lunch stop. Due to it being on First Nations land, permission has now been denied to land, and we will cross over to Alyard Beach for lunch. It is a 6.5 Kt distance. Becher Bay is well protected, mostly undeveloped and particularly scenic, just a lovely place to paddle! Most of the land belongs to the Scianew First Nation which built the colourful homes at Spirit Bay, upgraded their popular Marina and docks, and operate several Spill Response vessels for JDF Strait.

There is a launch and parking fee of $10 per kayak, and washrooms are available.

Winds permitting, we will follow a clockwise route around Becher Bay, and make two short crossings to islands and islets in the Bay.

Route plan B

If winds are up, we can probably still do the leeward side of the bay, and just come back the same way, which has most of the interesting bits to it,

Safety reminders

Always dress for the possibility of immersion and please bring a drybag containing a spare change of clothes. The drybag goes in your kayak with you, not in your car at the launch site. Please bring a lunch or snacks and sufficient beverage to keep you hydrated, as well as a thermos of something warm. Your paddle leader will introduce the plan and make sure everyone is comfortable with the requirements. Please stay off the water until the group is ready. If you have a VHF radio please bring it with you.
