Details:
Our leader will introduce the Plan and make sure everyone is comfortable with the requirements and any concerns that you may have. Please stay off the water until we are all ready. The leader may choose to enlist helpers and establish communications protocol. If you have VHF radio please bring it with you.
Plan A:
New SISKA members (joined during the past 12 months) will be given preference when registering for this paddle. Long time members may also register.
The Plan is to leave the launch at Spirit Bay (Cheanuh Marina) and do a clockwise tour of the coast line of Becher Bay. After leaving Becher Bay, we will proceed east along the coastline towards Whirl Bay. This is an interesting shoreline of craggy rock outcrops and with the potential for ocean swells. Orca have been known to frequent this part of the coastline! Our destination is Whirl Bay- a nice protected beach that is part of the Department of National Defense 'Rocky Point' lands. After lunch, we will leave the beach and head back west along the coastline and go on the outside of the Large Bedford Island and then across the mouth of Becher Bay towards Aylard Farm ( East Sooke Park) and then around Wolf Island before heading back to our launch point.
This is a slightly longer paddle (i.e. almost 10 nautical miles), with a crossing at the mouth of Becher Bay that can be bumpy and with sections of the route that can experience some ocean swells.
After our paddle, we can debrief at the MyChosen Cafe for ice cream and other treats!
PLEASE NOTE: The launch fee at Spirit Bay is now $10/kayak (not $4 as it has been for several years).
Plan B:
If the winds don't cooperate, we can do a relaxed tour of Becher Bay which can quite protected from the weather and has a very interesting shoreline with lots of 'ins and outs' around rocky outcrops and with a wide range of marine life.
