Nanaimo Paddlers invites you to their April 6 meeting by Zoom.
A Materials Scientist Reviews Gear, with Barry Narod
For all of our outdoor activities, for all of our lives, we have pushed our equipment to performance limits. We always seek stronger, lighter, more powerful. One common example is our batteries. This aspect of our outdoor lives is valid whether it be for outdoor sports activities or for scientific expeditions into challenging environments.
Sometimes our equipment fails.
Dr. Barry Narod will look at three pieces of gear which aged, failed, and what we can do about each of them. 1. a shock absorbing tow line that has lost its stretch, 2. an old and a new PFD, 3. a failed drysuit gasket, and how to temporarily repair one in the field.
Barry will review other gear, accessories, repairs, fixes, and ways to prolong the lifespan of our equipment.
In addition, Barry will look at skeg wires, what works, what does not, and why. He will report on a long running experiment he is undertaking to test novel skeg wire materials.
Dr. Barry Narod, P.Geo.retired is an adjunct professor of geophysics at the University of BC. He received the first Ph.D. in glaciology at UBC in 1979, and operated a geophysical instruments company, developing and deploying his instruments all over the world, until retiring in 2008. His fieldwork has taken Barry and his instruments to the high Arctic ocean and islands, to the South Pole, to the Andes, to the high Himalaya and central Tibet, and to many other locations. His scientific research is ongoing, both on the ground and in space.
