Description
What:
A SISKA Energizer paddle from Moses Point to Russell Island
Skill Level:
This paddle is rated as an Energizer Paddle because of its distance and open water crossings and possible current. To understand this designation better, please read SISKA's Paddle Guidelines
Paddlers taking part in this paddle are required to have PC Level 1 or equivalent experience. For information about PC Levels click here.
The total distance of this paddle is estimated to be approximately 11.00nm.
When:
Sunday, June 30th, 2024. Meet at the launchsite by 09:30am to be on the water by 10:00am
Where:
We will launch at Moses Point. Need directions to the launchsite? Click here.
Who:
This paddle will be led by Dave Chater For more information about this paddle email Dave Chater
Details:
Our leader will introduce the Plan and make sure everyone is comfortable with the requirements and any concerns that you may have. Please stay off the water until we are all ready. The leader may choose to enlist helpers and establish communications protocol. If you have VHF radio please bring it with you.
Plan A:
Leaving the Moses Point launch point- we will cross over to the SW shoreline of Salt Spring Island and noodle this coastline until reaching Isabella Pt. At this point, we will cross from Isabella Point to our lunch spot on Russell Island (part of the Gulf Islands National Park). We can use our stop at Rissell Island to do a short walk up to historic Kanaka homestead. NOTE: there is a toilet at our lunch stop. Yeah- Parks Canada!!
After lunch, we will do a circumnavigation of Russell Island before heading back to Isabella Point. Instead of following the attached trip plot that heads over to the North Saanich shoreline, I prefer to stay along the SSI shoreline as it is more natural and quieter as we head back to Moses Point.
After our paddle, we can do a paddle debrief at The Roost for coffee/tea and treats!
The distance from the parking area to the beach launch point is about 100m - so if you have kayak wheels- this is a good time to bring them (but not necessary)
Plan B:
I will assess the weather conditions closer to the trip date and adjust the trip route if necessary. I will communicate any change via email to the registered paddlers.
