Details:
Our leader will introduce the Plan and make sure everyone is comfortable with the requirements and any concerns that you may have. Please stay off the water until we are all ready. The leader may choose to enlist helpers and establish communications protocol. If you have VHF radio please bring it with you.
Plan A:
Meet at Cheanuh Marina (Spirit Bay,4901 East Sooke Rd). Please leave sufficient time for the drive and be ready to launch at 10am.
We will noodle the shoreline of the Bay, exploring islets, coves, islands and even a tombolo!
Whales have occasionally been spotted in Becher Bay, but we are sure to see lots of smaller critters so bring your camera.
Becher Bay is well protected, mostly undeveloped and particularly scenic, just a lovely place to paddle! Most of the land belongs to the Scianew First Nation which built the colourful homes at Spirit Bay, upgraded their popular Marina and docks, and operate several Spill Response vessels for JDF Strait.
There is a launch and parking fee of $10 per kayak, and washrooms are available.
Winds permitting, we will follow a clockwise route around Becher Bay, and make two short crossings to islands and islets in the Bay.
The total paddle distance planned is 6.5nm.
Plan B:
Depending on the wind forecast, we may avoid crossing the Bay and remain on the lee side. If forecast winds are too strong in Becher Bay the paddle may be relocated to another area.
